Bear Grylls, the British adventurer and TV presenter of Discovery's Man vs. Wild, squinting into the sun. In one episode he drank his own urine to avoid dehydration, and the internet never forgot. The meme took off on Reddit in September 2010 with "The sun is going down" / "better drink my own piss". The format is survival advice that solves nothing. The top line is an ordinary problem, the bottom line is Bear's extreme solution, usually the same one. "Found water" / "better pee in it." "Arm itches" / "cut it off." "Finds a fully working car" / "eats it." Every situation is a survival situation. A helicopter is spare parts, a village is a source of calories, a sleeping bag is a carcass. To his credit, Grylls has a good sense of humour about it and has joked about the meme himself. **Why it caught on:** one unforgettable TV moment turned a real survival expert into everyone's favourite overreaction.
