A One Does Not Simply post.
One Does Not Simply comes from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001). Sean Bean's Boromir warns the Council of Elrond that "one does not simply walk into Mordor," circling his thumb and finger in the air. He's explaining to a room full of elves, dwarves and a wizard that Mordor is dangerous. They had heard. The top line is always "One does not simply." The bottom line is anything that's much harder than it sounds. "Eat just one chip." "Close one browser tab." "Leave IKEA with only what you came for." The hand gesture does most of the work - it's the gesture of someone very sure of the difficulty. Two hobbits later did walk into Mordor, slowly and with a lot of complaining, but Boromir's point about chips still stands. **Why it caught on:** every small task is an epic quest if you say it in Boromir's voice.
