It's a spin-off of the Scumbag format, where the hat marks whoever is behaving badly. The top line is something America says or values. The bottom line is the contradiction. It's the internet's long-running habit of roasting the country, often by Americans themselves. "Starts a revolution over tea" / "Drinks coffee." "Calls it the World Series" / "Only invites North America." "Hates the metric system" / "Buys soda in two-litre bottles." Plenty of posts go after foreign policy and politics too, in the usual early-2010s style. The hat does most of the work. Put it on anything - a dog, a cloud, an entire country - and it instantly looks like it owes you twenty dollars. **Why it caught on:** everyone has an opinion about America, and the hat made sharing it a one-line job.
