"this item is worth $7,500" / I'll give you 50 bucks for it
A Pawn Stars post.
Rick Harrison, co-owner of the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas and star of History's reality show Pawn Stars, which began in 2009. The photo shows him with a calm, slightly sceptical smile, on a red and white background. The meme is built from two habits on the show. He lowballs offers, and he often calls in an outside expert to check an item. So the top line is something valuable and the bottom line the offer: "A $100 bill?" / "I'll give you 50 for it." "The original Mona Lisa?" / "Best I can do is fifty bucks." Or the expert: "Old nickel?" / "Let me call my buddy who's an expert in old nickels." "Best I can do" became a catchphrase on its own. To be fair to Rick, a pawn shop has to resell things at a profit, so the lowball is the job. But on the internet, he would offer you six dollars for a gold bar and call a friend to confirm it was gold. **Why it caught on:** "best I can do" fits every haggle, every raise and every negotiation you've ever lost.
