Chuck Norris, the martial artist and actor best known for Walker, Texas Ranger. From 2005, "Chuck Norris facts" spread online: wildly exaggerated claims about his toughness, collected on a fan site by Ian Spector and passed around everywhere. The facts are delivered as calmly as a weather report. That deadpan is the whole joke. Captions follow one formula: something ordinary, broken by Chuck. "Chuck Norris doesn't do push-ups" / "he pushes the Earth down." "Chuck Norris counted to infinity" / "twice." "When Chuck Norris enters a room" / "he doesn't turn the lights on, he turns the dark off." Office versions follow: "Chuck Norris doesn't need Wi-Fi. The internet connects to him." Norris took it with good humour and later put out his own book of the facts, which is the toughest possible response to being turned into a meme: joining in. **Why it caught on:** an endless supply of one-liners with a hero who can't lose, and a real man good-natured enough to play along.
