Steve, the blocky default character of Minecraft, the game Markus "Notch" Persson started in 2009 and Mojang fully released in 2011. His square head sits on a colour wheel made of the game's own blocks: lava, brick, stone, grass. Steve's face has the expression of a man who has punched a tree with his bare hands and seen it work. Which he has. The top line is something Minecraft lets you do, the bottom line is the logic nobody questions. "Wake up on an island" / "punch trees." "Fill a bucket with lava" / "put it in your pocket." "Finds diamond" / "dies in lava." Real-world physics doesn't apply. Sand falls, but a floating tree is fine. A cooked steak stays warm in a chest forever. And the sun going down means only one thing: dig a hole and hide in it, like any sensible adult. **Why it caught on:** millions of players knew the rules were absurd, and loved them anyway.
