Slowpoke, the pink, permanently sleepy Pokémon from the original games, with a blank and very relaxed stare. In the Pokédex it's known for being so slow it takes five seconds to even feel pain.

On the internet this made it the mascot for old news. Every forum has someone who arrives a week late with a story everyone else discussed already. Slowpoke is that person, shown with dignity.

Captions start with an event and end with the delayed reaction. "Hey guys" / "did you hear about that new movie, Titanic?" "Finally figured out" / "why the joke was funny. Three days later." "Shares 'breaking news' in the group chat" / "from last Tuesday." Some versions add "...hey guys" as a slow, trailing afterthought.

The beauty of it is that Slowpoke is never embarrassed. It is simply there, eventually, smiling, with information.

Why it caught on: it's the kindest way to tell someone their news is stale.
