A headshot of Janeane Garofalo, the comedian and actress known for Reality Bites and The Truth About Cats & Dogs. After her April 2009 comments about the Tea Party on MSNBC spread online, 4chan users began making image macros of her that September.
The character on the picture is not really her. It's a stand-in for a type: the self-described radical whose principles go missing as soon as they become inconvenient.
The top line states a position, the bottom line contradicts it. "Down with capitalism! Eat the rich!" / "posted from my new iPhone." "Says everyone should be tolerant" / "unfriends you after one debate." "Free speech for everyone" / "except people I disagree with."
It's political, so it gets argued about; the jokes target hypocrisy more than any single view. Garofalo herself has simply carried on doing comedy, which is probably the best reply. It predates the similar College Liberal series.
Why it caught on: pointing out hypocrisy in two lines is satisfying, whichever side you're on.
